Product description

The C-2 is a state-of-the-art military transport aircraft developed with an all-out effort of Japan’s technology. It is designed with particular emphasis on oversize cargo transportation and high-speed long-distance operation, minding capabilities for rapid deployment and response to various situations, as well as airlift mission for international peace cooperation activities such as UN peacekeeping operations, humanitarian aid, disaster relief, etc.

The development of the XC-2 started in 2001 based on the requirements by the Japan Air Self Defense Force(JASDF). At that time, the JASDF operated the C-1 transport aircraft, indigenously developed and manufactured, deployed in early 1970s, and the C-130H transport aircraft, introduced from the United States. However, since the JASDF needed the successor to the C-1 with its retirement, the study and evaluation of candidate aircraft was conducted. The candidates were C-130J, C-17 and A400M.

However, any candidate did not satisfy all of the wide range of JASDF’s requirements, such as payload, takeoff and landing distance, range, maximum cruise speed, etc., the development of new transport aircraft was launched.

As a result, the C-2 was sized approximately twice as large as the C-130H and approximately half as large as the C-17 in terms of takeoff-weight.

The first flight of the XC-2 was conducted in January 2010 and its operation was started in March 2017. Currently, the C-2 is in production for the JASDF.

With its superior performance and capability, the C-2 will contribute to activities of various countries striving to the free, secure and peaceful world.
